Featured Queen: Comet
Comet is the drag name of Tristan Candler, a 16 year-old drag queen from Los Angeles, California.
Read Comet's Q&A interview below.
When did you start doing drag?
June 2015
What inspired you to start doing drag?
Rupaul's Drag Race (of course) and seeing the "teen queen community" grow very rapidly.
I also like competing in some of the online competitions if they are moderately professional,
I actually won a makeup competition called Creative Cosmetics Competition
(@creativecosmeticscompetition) on Instagram.
How does drag make you feel? (Many queens say they feel liberated or free when they are in drag)
I do drag as an outlet for artistic expression, it makes feel like there are no limitations on articles of clothing or cosmetic products.
Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?
My biggest inspiration for a lot of the things I do artistically is Gwen Stefani, I look up to her so much as an artist and creative individual. I also get a lot of aesthetic inspiration from European models like Cara Delevingne.
Karen O, Santigold, Lana Del Rey, Naomi Campbell, and Bjork are also big inspirations for Comet's abrasive look and haute persona.
Who are your three all time favourite Queens?
Pearl [Liaison], Alaska [Thunderfuck], and Milk [Queen] if we're talking Rupaul's Drag Race queens. Rubber Child, Lisa Limbaugh, and Zinc (My drag sister) if we're talking Queens in general.
Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?
Comet has a signature look, she is very 90's supermodel. I don't always do an "Ideal" feminine look, I like to balance sides of both genders to create and almost realistic aesthetic, a lot of people in the community like my look because it is so easy to receive and enjoy, there is a little bit in there for everybody.
What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?
Through drag a big ambition would be to get onto Rupaul's Drag Race, but also to bring it even more into the mainstream through music and fashion.
Do you perform in drag? If so, where?
I do not currently perform due to my being underage, I have a few places in mind of where I'd like to perform but nothing is set in stone.
What are some of your favourite songs you would like to perform?
I don't perform, but I still want to answer this. The songs I'd most like to perform are 'What you waiting for?' by Gwen Stefani, 'Champagne Glass' by the Alphastates, and 'GO!' by Santigold and Karen O. I like these songs because they really embody what Comet is.
If you could only have 3 makeup products to do your complete drag makeup look for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Liquid Eyeliner, my Kat Von D contour kit, and probably mac lipstick in the shade Film Noir (Right).
What is your one favourite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?
I love my black leotards!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I hope to see myself performing and giving life to the chilrens in West Hollywood henny!
What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?
I love that it's becoming more enjoyable in the mainstream media, I just feel like it really opens so many doors to queens around the globe. I also think Marco Marco has helped a lot by bringing queens onto the runway and so has Miley Cyrus by bringing them onto the VMA stage with her.
Anything else we should know about your drag persona?
1. Comet is a fat BITCH !
2. Zinc and I are currently working on a single entitled Space Complaints, so everyone be looking for it to release sometime in the coming months!
