Featured Queen: Siren LaCoast
Siren LaCoast is the drag name of Nicolas, a 20 year old drag queen from San Antonio, Nicolas started doing drag in June 2015, after being inspired by RuPaul's Drag Race - with the ambition to become better than the established queens on the show, he became Siren LaCoast, and with a performing arts background to help her along the way, she started performing in San Antonio and Austin. Read our Q&A with Siren below.
What inspired you to start doing drag?
I remember seeing queens on Ru Paul's Drag Race and thinking "I know I can do way better than that bitch." as well as with a few of the queens in my local area. Being in a performance arts magnet school for four years I felt I was a seasoned individual to actually do well in drag.
However, what really inspired me to start drag was Adore Delano and her song with Alaska Thunderfuck "I Look Fucking Cool" I think that was the moment I was told by another force to follow my heart, and I did.
How does drag make you feel?
Going for my degree in radio at the university, I'm constantly bombarded with school work and stress leaving me with little time to creatively express myself, which is what drag is there for. Once or twice a week I get to check out and allow almost a different entity take control of me, and that's ,Siren. Usually, once the wig comes on with the full face and outfit and a cig is lit I transition into her and have the overwhelming feeling of independence, power and sex driven. I feel unstoppable. I'm able to dance, sing (in some numbers) and write and produce my own music.
Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?
-The Gotham Sirens have always been apart of my life. I have Cat Woman's independence and moves, Poison Ivy's charm and sexuality, and Harley Quinn's crazed mind.
The name Siren derives from them actually, as well as the mythical creatures that sing to sailors and shipment to win their hearts and eat them.
Who are your all time favourite Queens?
Lana Del Rey
Alaska Thunderfuck
Adore Delano
Laganja Estranja
Raven
Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?
Usually dark. Body tight, rarely any pants or dresses, I like the rooftop city look. However, I love constructing large body pieces from wire to add to myself.
What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?
Be signed to a record company and expand drag into the popular media. I don't want to be "just another drag queen making what ever music and putting her name on it" k actually want to be involved and considered an artist. I'd love to have my own radio station at some point and host as siren, much like "Whats up Queen" and Logo TV.
Where do you Perform?
San Antonio Texas at the Heat Night Club and some clubs in Austin when booked.
What are some of your favourite songs to perform?
Lana Del Rey - Body Electric: it's very personal to me because I include transition of the Fall and Spring seasons.
Lady Gaga - Marry The Night: this song was always a liberation for me each time I heard it, in fact I feel the song describes siren and my constant situation perfectly. It was the first time I've
won first place in drag and my first competition.
What is your one favourite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?
I LOVE to incorporate capes into my looks. It makes me feel like a real super being and city dweller.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
Hopefully, if not in a recording studio, in a radio station hosting a PM nightlife radio show.
What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?
I this its fucking great. It's being shown as an art and talent rather than being confused with transgendered intentions.
Anything else we should know about Siren?
- I write and produce my own music
- I'm sick and tired of queens getting their faces painted for them and borrowing outfits
- I usually like to perform a full number instead of chopping or mixing into it.
- I'll respect any queen with her own edge and flare and desire to be herself.
- I didn't have a drag mother and did it al for me. I think you should do drag if it makes you feel beautiful and truly yourself OR someone else (that's still you lol)
