Hey Mary's Underwater Ball

Hey Mary is the latest creation hosted by infamous drag queen Lucy Fur and friends. Their latest event, titled "The Underwater Ball" recently took place and, as always, was a great success. I was lucky enough to attend the event, and am so glad I did.

The night was hosted by Lucy Fur, who was accompanied by Medusa Repulsa, Polly Amorous, Lilith and Heidi Wurst.

The night started with a DJ set from the incredible Sissy Boy Tears, who DJ'd all through the night playing weird yet wonderful songs. Their music is unlike anything you'd hear at any other gay night in Cardiff. They stayed away from the typically popular songs such as RuPaul, Lady Gaga etc. And instead, went for a more alternative vibe, playing the likes of Grimes and Crystal Castles, which was all well received by the audience.

Then took to the stage, the magnificent Lucy Fur (pictured above), with her ever-wonderful hosting skills. Her hateful yet hilarious comedy gets the audience going and ready for the great night ahead. Lucy interacted with the audience flawlessly, even getting one guy to give her free rein of his Grindr account.

Lucy then introduced the first act of the night, Heidi Wurst.

Heidi took to the stage dressed in a baby pink crushed velvet ballet dress, complete with tutu, matching pumps and an umbrella. She then performed the ever popular "It's Raining Men" by The Weather Girls, which, obviously got the crowd going.

After Heidi's performance, Lucy announced that they would be taking a quick break. Lucy, along with the other queens then mingled with audience members in the smoking area of Clwb Ifor Bach, where the event was hosted. This interaction with the audience made for a more personal and enjoyable experience, where you can actually meet and talk to the performers, rather than be separated from them, like many other events.

Then came the next performer, Polly Amorous, again, introduced by Lucy. Polly is a new queen who recently won the title of "Cardiff's Next Drag Superstar" while competing in "Jolene's Drag Race," which is a local drag competition, hosted by infamous Cardiff queen Jolene Dover at the ever-popular Pulse club. Polly performed a medley of songs including songs from "The Little Mermaid".

Medusa Repulsa was on next, where she performed an incredible mashup of Little Mermaid songs, a rock remix of Britney Spears' "Toxic" and a punk-pop version of "Radioactive", originally performed by Imagine Dragons. While performing, Medusa was covered in various "toxic waste" by Lucy, Polly & Lilith. By the end of the performance, Medusa was laying on the floor covered in thick black paint and neon silly string, while dressed as a mermaid. The entire performance was unbelievably epic, definitely a main highlight of the night.

Hey Mary is definitely a show you need to see if you ever get a chance. I'm so glad I went, and honestly can't believe I haven't been to their two previous events. I can't wait for the next event, and look forward to seeing what the queens turn out this time.
