Featured Queen: Sakura Ratchét

When did you start doing drag?

I started doing drag shortly after turning 18 (2013). I did drag for a year but then the clubs I performed at became 21+ so I decided to take a break until I was of age, now here I am making my comeback!

What inspired you to start doing drag?

I had always liked makeup & fashion, then I started watching RuPaul's Drag Race & made some drag friends who convinced me to start doing it for myself and now I'm so happy that I did.

How does drag make you feel?

I would [say] that I feel pretty free in drag. It really allows me to share my crazy side without the fear of people thinking that I'm actually crazy.... (lol). I'm able to do so many things I wouldn't do as myself & it allows me to makeup this crazy world/person known as Sakura Ratchét.

Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?

There are a lot of people/things that inspire my drag... Some would have to be RuPaul, Divine, Edith Massey, Jennifer Tilly, Paris Hilton, Eli Roth, Emilie Autumn, Marilyn Manson, Kim Chi, Thorgy Thor, Melanie Martinez, etc. I also get a lot of inspiration from horror movies & anime!

Who are your three all time favourite Queens?

I love SO MANY queens!!! I guess 3 though would be Kim Chi, Jackie Hell, & Divine. ♥

Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?

My looks tend to vary but I usually end up going with darker, horror looks. I love goth, victorian, burlesque, & pinup styles with a twist!

What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?

I would LOVE to host my own drag show, model, sing, act, etc. all in drag! I want to do a lot of things & show the world my craziness! I would also love to become somebody that people can look up to again & help them to feel accepted.

Do you perform in drag? If so, where?

Yes, I do. Currently I perform Every other Monday night at BADLANDS (gay bar) in Sacramento. It's really fun and I'm hoping to expand to more clubs later this year.

What are some of your favourite songs to perform?

I love performing different things so I guess some songs I love doing would be "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson, "Give Me Your Money" by Little Big, "Pity Party" by Melanie Martinez, "Sexuality" by Ultraviolet Sound, "Well Everybody's Fucking In A U.F.O." by Rob Zombie, & "Fight Like A Girl" by Emilie Autumn. They are all really fun songs to do and some are funny, some are meaningful, and others are just out there! Lol

If you could only have 3 makeup products to do your complete drag makeup look for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?

Eyeshadow (I could use it for eyes, contour, & lips.) An eyeshadow brush (to apply the eyeshadow). & Foundation (to cover my flaws)

What is your one favourite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?

I have a gold dress that I love but I have my eyes on a beautiful black & white gown that I can't wait to get one day. ♥

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

In 5 years I am hoping I will be done with all my schooling (makeup, special FX, fashion design, maybe cosmetology, & even Security training) so that I can become a much better/professional queen. Hopefully I would also have my own drag show by then either in Sacramento, Seattle, San Francisco, or L.A. ♥ oh!, & hopefully my little YouTube & music hobbies will be going well as well! ;)

What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?

I think it's great! Drag is becoming so popular and can now be a legit career path in the entertainment industry. Big celebrities are fans of drag queens which means that drag queens can pretty much become full on celebrities as well. I honestly can see through the next few more years that more queens will get on TV, be in movies, collaborate with mainstream musicians, etc. Drag is slowly taking over, & the more queens we have, the faster we'll grow. (Even though it just makes it a little harder to stand out).

Anything else we should know about your drag persona?

Sakura Ratchét is a crazy, geeky, funny, bitch. ♥ I love all the people that support me and I really just hope to accomplish so many great things as Sakura. I'm a big mess but I will always be there for people. On stage though, I'm hoping to work more on my aesthetic & I can become so weird and so psycho that even if you don't like me or my style you're just gonna keep watching. I'm still working on creating the best form of Sakura, but I promise that she's on her way.... >;)
