Featured Queen: Mythica

Mythica is the drag persona of Chance Jester, an 18 year-old queen from Gilmer, Texas. Jester has been doing drag for over 4 years, but has been dabbling in "gender-bending" for years, going through an androgynous phase which later evolved into drag.

What inspired you to start doing drag?

I would always dance in my room with a rag on my head pretending to be a female pop-star. I actually had a name when I would dress up and dance in my room. I would even interact with a fictional audience, it was my favorite thing to do as a kid. When I discovered what drag was, I was in disbelief that it was actually a thing! I had a female persona for performing as a kid, so it was funny that I was always doing drag instinctively without even knowing what it was.

How does drag make you feel? Many queens say they feel liberated or free when they are in

drag.

It makes me feel incredible! If I paint on my usual face, it gives me that opportunity to look into the mirror and love myself. I struggled with an eating disorder when I was a teenager because of family issues that were going on, it also led me to a suicide attempt and it caused me to temporarily drop out of school. I also had a lot of acne at the time, so I was very unhappy with my appearance and myelf in general. I still struggle with my confidence because of what I went through in my early teen years, but when I get into drag I have pads on, and I am super happy with my body, and my face as well. I thought I was transgender for a long time because I thought I'd be happy with my appearance as a female, but I managed to forget that I don't have the mentality of a female, I enjoyed being male, but the idea of being a female was glamourized for me. I wanted to be transgender for vanity reasons, and I'm happy I did not go through with it. I found a way to have a female side, but still be able to put on a snapback and pee outside as a boy with drag.

Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?

My looks are all very unique when I look at them, a huge portion of my drag wardrobe is punk rock edgy pop-star type costumes that could be worn by people like Ke$ha. When I sit down and create my own outfits, that's when my looks come out the best. I take a lot of inspiration from Mugler, and designers like Alexander McQueen that were so over-the-top and avant garde. I watch a lot of Project Runway, and I pay attention to grand designs that are so next level. When I envisioned Mythica, I decided I would be a mythical creature and my looks would never be human, that's my personal style, but I also like to be versatile which is why I settle for "fish" at times.

Who are your three all time favourite Queens?

I love Violet Chachki, her style is very particular and something you wouldn't expect. I love how she is the epitome of a popular actress from the 1950's, but she owns a lot of amazing S&M/Bondage pieces too. I also love Adore Delano, not her style in specific, but her personality and the fact that she changed the game. She was a new girl, and she represented the new community of drag queens, and she made it all the way to the final three against people with much more experience. She was just an inspiration to me, being a young queen myself. I like Tatianna too, she's the queen who made me realize that drag could be pretty. She's probably my favorite drag queen of all time.

Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?

My concept is very unique because it's less "typical drag, with padding and tits and a snatched face" and more of a dark creature that has specific characteristics. I don't go for "female impersonation" unless I'm doing something natural, but I'd rather look like I'm straight out of the pages of a storybook. I think "scary" things are beautiful. People think I'm a freak because we'll be

watching a horror movie, and while they're holding their hands over their eyes, I'm sitting there watching the most disturbing thing and going "fuck yeah, that's awesome!" for example, I saw The Babadook and had to do a look inspired by it. Most people think horror is scary, but when I see

something scary I think it's absolutely genius! Anything that sends chills down my spine, I want to do something inspired by it.

What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?

I want to win RuPaul's Drag Race. It's not even my biggest goal in drag, but it's my life goal in general. I saw that show on Netflix, and after one episode I immediately knew I wanted to go for it, and I plan on doing it.

Do you perform in drag? If so, where?

In my bedroom! I get called a "bedroom queen" quite often, but the reality is, in my area I can't perform at gay bars because I'm not 21. I've performed at Pride, and in local talent shows, and I can't travel to areas where it's 18+ so it's very difficult.

If you perform, what are some of your favourite songs to perform?

I love Porcelain Black and Natalia Kills, alternative pop musicians with an edge.

If you could only have 3 makeup products to do your complete drag makeup look for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?

I use coty powder religiously, I wear it as a boy. I rely on it, and I would never go back to using pressed powder. I used MAC Studio Fix for a long time, but coty powder is absolutely amazing. I also use a lot of baby powder to set my highlights - it works very well, as long as you prime. But my favorite makeup product is clown white by Mehron.

What is your one favorite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?

My favorite costume by far is a look that I designed myself, it's basically a black faux leather leotard with silver embellishments, and a gigantic Satanic horn headpiece with silver studs.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

I hope I can get on drag race and win! That's my #1 priority.

What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?

I think it's great, I think if the show had never happened, I wouldn't be doing drag. I just think the community needs to be more welcoming, it's been more vicious in the past decade than ever before. People don't know the difference between shade and a read, which is a problem. Things get personal too often.
