AN INTERVIEW WITH CRYSTAL LUBRIKUNT

Meet Crystal Lubrikunt; a 21 year-old drag queen currently living Brighton. Crystal is a well known face in the UK drag community, largely known for her headline performances at Bar Revenge.

When did you start doing drag?

I was 18

Amateur Drag debut: Feb 2013

Professional debut: 19th June 2013

How did you become inspired to start doing drag?

I'd enjoyed drag from a far, as a fan even, from Too Wong Foo, La Cage Aux Folle, Lilly Savage and Priscilla to RuPaul and his show.

I never was inspired to do it, I kinda was pushed. I performed a lip-sync piece within my arts

course at university and someone told me to have a go, so I did.

And it worked.

What does drag mean to you?

Everything, I live, eat, sleep and breathe drag. I'd be nothing without it, it's not everyone's caramel coffee frappucino with a dash of cinnamon and a lot of whip cream is it?

Was it something you always knew you wanted to do, or something you realised later in life?

I always saw myself being a performer up until the age of 17, then wanted to be a photographer. Drag was a complete surprise.

What is your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?

My ultimate aim is to tour the world over and over, to constantly be performing until I am able to have people come to me.

Until I am able to have a 4-5 show a week residency in a club/cabaret within a nice city and start a family. You can't predict the future but I'd love to see my future ending up that way! Whenever I make a connection with an audience member, whether it be 10 or 200, that's an achievement in itself.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Touring, i love travelling and meeting new people all the time, I just cracked New York City and disgraced 5 shows over there and am returning next May, I'd love to crack Brazil and a couple European cities by then! I like to live in the moment though, so we'll see! I expect the unexpected when it comes to life.

How do you feel about the recent increase in popularity of drag, largely because of RuPaul’s Drag Race?

I mean it's fabulous! Mainly because I have had an increase in bookings haha! I love it, I welcome all with open arms as long as they have the right attitude, they do their homework and if they wanna have a crack at a career in drag? They're able to answer the ultimate question:

What can you bring to the scene you're within that nobody has yet?

To all the baby queens out there, quit the yearn to be like this queen or that queen because they're funny, sickening and what-not.

Do you, cos there's only ONE of you!

How would you describe Crystal’s style?

Talentless.

Who are your favourite fellow queens?

Virgin Xtravaganzah, Dickie Beau, Ruby Roo, Elizabeth James, Honey Davenport, Evah Destruction, Meth and Ruby Wednesday.

Who are you inspired by?

Life, my mother, Madonna and Gin Wigmore

What is your go-to look?

Sequin hotpants, I'm surprised I haven't been called out for wearing them so much but then I remember, DRAG HAS NO RULES!

What are some of your favourite songs to perform?

I do mixes so I don't get to do straight-as they are-songs very often but I have a residency in Brighton at my home bar called Revenge and when I announced at the last night of my 1st season that'd i'd be returning for good I performing 'And I'm Telling I'm Not Going' and I f**king too i there, got the crowd a couple shirts and took them all the way home. That and 'Look At Me Now' by Chris Brown ft Busta Rhymes.

If you could only use three makeup items for the rest of your life what would they be?

Foundation, Lipstick and Powder.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Crystal?
