Claire O'Win is a 17 year-old queen from Boston, MA who started drag in their early teens.
Read our Q&A with Claire below.
When did you start doing drag?
Well, that's a tricky question. In my early teen years, around 12-13, I started cross dressing. My friend let me wear her clothes, and I really liked it. For a while I thought I might be trans. But my mother wasn't very accepting, and made me feel really bad about myself. So for years I had to hide that part of me. Finally when I moved to my dads house last year, he was really accepting of me. I started doing "pretty" makeup then, and just these past four months or so I started doing drag makeup and collecting clothes!
What inspired you to start doing drag?
Hmmm. I guess there are a lot of things. Since I was young, I was always drawn to the female form, and always wanted to feel beautiful. I was the girl character in videogames when I played with my friends, and my favorite power ranger was the pink one. But my main drag queen inspiration would have to be Detox. My drag isn't really similar to hers, but my personality is, and her story of how she overcame her lack of confidence through drag really inspired me.
How does drag make you feel?
When I am in drag, I feel like the baddest bitch in the room. I feel flawless, I feel beautiful, and as if nothing could stop me. It's the complete opposite of how I am dressed as a boy, and I love that my art gives me a chance to express myself.
Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?
I think my main inspirations for drag would be Detox, Sharon Needles, and Trixie Mattel. I love all of them so much, and their drag styles are all so unique in their own sense. As for inspiration from somebody who isn't a drag queen, I'd have to say Maria Brink (Lead Singer of In This Moment) or Monami Frost (Tattoo Model). They're both just so badass and beautiful at the same time. When I look at them, I think "Damn, that's who I want Claire to be."
Who are your three all time favourite Queens?
Detox, Sharon Needles, and Trixie Mattel.
Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?
I'd like to consider my look a Pastel Grunge Druggie. She's a beautiful, badass bitch and doesn't care what anybody thinks of her. She loves to be pretty, but isn't scared to get a little messy while having a good time.
What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?
My ultimate ambition would be to live off of what I make doing drag. Just enough for an apartment, car, etc. Of course being on drag race would be great, but I would be just as happy staying local forever. All these girls today want to be on drag race, and it's almost like they're making this cookie cutter mold for queens to fit into.
If you could only have 3 makeup products to do your complete drag makeup look for the rest of your life, what would they be and why?
I would have to say the KVD contour palette, a good matte foundation, and a liquid liner. I do my brows out of the contour kit and my eyeshadow too, and I can do my lips with the black liquid liner.
What is your one favourite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?
This pill dress I recently got! I think it fits my drag character flawlessly.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I see myself performing somewhere with the drag family I hopefully have by then!
What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?
Hmmm. I think drag race is both beneficial and not at the same time. I think it's beneficial because it gives queens more publicity and launches the careers of some flawless girls, but like I said before, I think it contributes to a cookie cutter standard for newer queens that even I have let effect my drag.
