Featured Queen: Mars
Mars is a 17 year old queen from Marion, Texas, with impressive makeup skills, who started doing drag last July. Read Mars' Q&A interview below.
When did you start doing drag?
I began doing drag last July. It was around the time I decided to be who I am and told my parents that I wanted to wear makeup and that's what I did.
What inspired you to start doing drag?
Well, as a child I was always such an attention seeking little fag. Always performing, always looking for an audience. I've always been so feminine too. So when I found out what drag [was] (via drag race season 5) I knew it was something I wanted to do.
How does drag make you feel?
Drag makes me feel fierce and free. As I said before, I've always been so feminine and drag allows that side of me to take a physical, visible form which is an amazing feeling.
Who are you inspirations for your drag persona?
My first inspiration is, and always will be Lady Gaga. Everything she has done inspires me in some way or another and it was Gaga who taught me to be myself no matter what. My other inspirations are queens like Adore Delano, Milk, Rupaul, etc. basically any queen that has made a career out of drag and made it more than that really inspires me.
Who are your three all time favourite Queens?
Oh that's a hard one... I have to go with Adore Delano, Trixie Mattel, aaaaaaaand Alaska. I am absolutely in love with all of them. But Adore is such a huge role model for me.
Do you have a specific look you like to go for, or does your look vastly vary?
Well, Mars has a very distinct look I think. She's very feminine, but also such a badass. As for makeup, she keeps it bold and beautiful. I like to give her an eye that leans somewhere between Trixie and Pearl. When it comes to style, everything is very Ariana Grande meets Lady Gaga in her Born This Way era. Very feminine and cute, but edgy and sexy at the same time. lots of leather and faux fur.
What would be your ultimate ambition you would like to achieve through drag?
My dream goal as a drag queen is to perform and win at the Grammy Awards. I am a musical queen, which is one reason I look up to Adore so much. I want to make my own music, put out an album, and take it further than any queen before me. I sing and dance nonstop, so another major goal is to go on a tour with my music and put on my very own show.
Do you perform in drag?
Sadly, no. The reason being, I'm only seventeen years old as of now. However the second I'm of age, you can find me among the stars of Austin, Texas.
What songs would you like to perform?
I don't perform anywhere but my room, but my favorites to perform are Marry The Night and Bang Bang by Gaga, Break Free by Ariana Grande, and anything by Halsey. I just love strong female pop music.
If you could only have 3 makeup products to do your complete drag makeup look for the rest of your life, what would they be?
Oh my god... Well all I use for my drag is Burts Bees Chapstick, mascara, and BB cream. So those three. ;)
What is your one favourite piece of fashion or accessory from your wardrobe?
My favorite pieces I have are a pair of heels that I made my own once for an art project. I got a pair of black six inch heels from Goodwill, and then I broke up like 10 CDs and hot glued the pieces all over them. Very cosmic and colorful. Holographic almost.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
In five years I see myself in lots of places! Battle of the seasons, the Grammys, book signings, recording studios, the big screen, etc. I want to do a lot with my career and I won't stop until I've done it all.
What's your opinion on the recent increase in popularity of drag, due to things such as RuPaul's Drag Race?
I think it's absolutely amazing. Drag is such an artistic form of expression and performance. It's so much more than dudes in wigs and the fact that more and more people are paying attention and loving what drag is all about is so so so beautiful. It makes me so happy.
Anything else we should know about Mars?
Mars is a 15 year old cosmic princess straight from outer space. I have an irrational fear of grasshoppers. I can play the clarinet. I'm a senior in high school. I love musicals, the phantom of the opera is my favorite. I love tumblr, it's like my favorite thing to ever exist. ever.
